To have an impeccable installation and a long-lasting floor, it is necessary to follow some fundamental steps.
A professional installation for a long life of the parquet
Parquet represents a highly elegant choice for any environment. With its warm tones, this floor gives character and a touch of refinement to the home. To maximize its durability over time, however, it is essential to install it in the best possible way. Installing a wooden floor is not only an aesthetic issue but also a long-term investment that can increase the value of the property. In this detailed guide, we offer you all the information you need to know how to achieve a flawless installation. We will address every phase of the process, from the preparation of the surface, which is essential to guarantee a stable and uniform base, to the choice of the most appropriate materials and tools.
Before installation
The installation must be carried out by professional installers or qualified personnel. All fixtures must be assembled and functioning, the masonry works completed, the electrical and plumbing systems perfectly active. The environmental temperature must not be lower than 10°C and the relative humidity of the air between 45% and 60%.
The installation and polishing of other neighbouring floors, ceramic or other materials, must also have already taken place, as must the finishing and painting of the ceilings and walls. Before installation, check that the humidity of the substrate does not exceed 2% for normal or fast-drying cement screeds, 1.7% for heated screeds and 0.5% for anhydride screeds (if the installation is glued, pre-sand the anhydride screed and apply the primer).
Humidity control must be carried out using a carbide hygrometer (which guarantees greater reliability) immediately before installation (reference UNI 10329 Standard). Also check that the installation surface is clean of anything that can act as a release agent (dust, construction site residues, loose bodies, etc.).
Material storage
Store the parquet in a perfectly dry place, protected from humidity and not subject to water vapor retention. The temperature must not be lower than 0° and must not exceed 35°. Check that the air humidity is between 45% and 60%.
It is important to open packages only at the time of installation.
Conditions for installation
The parquet can be laid on a cement screed, on panels with a wooden base, on pre-existing floors or on joists. The screed, which must have a thickness of at least 40 mm, is made with normal or rapid cements.
Drying times for normal cements vary from 4 to 7 months or more, depending on the products and environmental conditions. The drying times of rapid cements, however, are between 3 and 7 days: in this case, the humidity check must always be carried out using a carbide hygrometer. It is also mandatory, according to legislation, to apply folded up polyethylene sheets along the walls, in order to create an effective vapor barrier.
If the parquet is laid on pre-existing floors, it is important to check that they are in good condition, perfectly washed and degreased, sanded in the case of ceramic or marble floors, grouted in the case of an old parquet. For carpet or linoleum, after removal, it is advisable to eliminate any adhesive residue by lightly sanding.
