Parquet
Does the parquet get damaged easily?
The wooden floor, with new painting technologies, is very resistant to trampling and daily wear. Furthermore, if cleaned and maintained with specific products it can maintain its beauty unaltered over time. After years of use, the parquet can possibly be renewed by carrying out a restyling operation which consists of a new sanding and repainting.
Is the parquet compatible with underfloor heating and/or cooling systems?
When talking about underfloor heating, the choice of wood can absolutely be considered. All pre-finished floors, especially wood species with high dimensional stability such as oak, teak and iroko, are suitable for installation on underfloor heating systems because they are equipped with a multi-layer support engraved in several parts which allows the heat to be spread evenly over the entire surface. It should also be highlighted that the technologies of heating and cooling systems are constantly evolving and it is therefore necessary to:
– pay particular attention to the thermotechnical design of the screed-floor system;
– ensure that the system is designed to maintain a suitable local microclimate which, in variable regime and operating conditions, is put under pressure to avoid any problems in the coils;
– carry out the heating/cooling pre-cycle before installation.
Can parquet be laid in the kitchen or bathroom?
The wooden floor can be easily laid both in the kitchen and in the bathroom. In fact, water, if it does not stagnate for a prolonged period, does not damage the parquet. To always have perfect parquet, it is advisable to use specific water-repellent products and maintain a relative humidity of the air between 45% and 60% and a temperature of around 20/22°C. Wood, being a natural and therefore living material, requires the same environmental conditions that are considered suitable and healthy for man himself.
Can parquet be laid on pre-existing floors?
Yes, if it concerns solidly fixed floors such as tiles, ceramics, stone, marble and derivatives.
Carpet, PVC and linoleum are incompatible with the installation of parquet: these must first be removed from the bottom together with the residues of the old adhesive.
Before installing the parquet, it is necessary to check that the subfloor is perfectly clean and eliminate any residue of wax, dirt or grease deposited over time. It must then, if necessary, be sanded so as to allow the new adhesive to take root more.
What are the technical characteristics and advantages of a parquet?
Wooden flooring represents a choice that respects the environment as it is sustainable and recyclable, unlike laminate, ceramic, marble and similar products. It is a material with enviable aesthetic qualities, has excellent durability and resistance to wear, guarantees good performance against mechanical and vibrational stress and provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. It can also easily be restored and/or renewed over time.
Finishes and treatments
Is the oil or varnish finish better?
The choice of the finish is very subjective because it depends on the aesthetic result and the sensations you want to obtain from your parquet. The oil finish gives the wooden floor a very natural effect while the varnish enhances the shades and colours of the woody fabrics.
Parquet with an oil finish leaves the surface of the wood natural, making the appearance of the parquet “warm” and “alive”. If the parquet is scratched, you can proceed, even locally, with the application of protective wax to restore it. It is advisable to nourish the oiled floor with protective wax at least once a year in order to always maintain a natural floor effect.
Parquet with a varnish finish can be cleaned easily: no shoe prints can be seen and if drops of water, sauce or anything else fall, no stains or streaks remain if removed quickly.
What are the most particular surface treatments and finishes?
The particular engraving treatments that characterize our products are saw cutting and hand or artisanal planing. The “saw cut” effect consists of small cuts perpendicular to the board, like those of old-fashioned sawing. The hand planing is carried out by master cabinetmakers board by board. With this treatment the surface regains the charm of the floors of the past as it is aged, irregular. The artisanal planing is carried out with special machinery and gives the surface a slightly wavy, original appearance, pleasant to the touch and sight. Our particular surface finish is the extra-gloss water-based paint that characterizes our Gloss® line.
What types of finishes and surface treatments are most popular?
Most of the requests are aimed at pre-finished water-based wax-effect painted finishes. Safe, stable product, 100% certified Made in Italy, suitable for green building and of absolute quality, beauty and practicality. In the last period, oil finishing has also seen an increase in demand. Another particular and widespread request is outdoor flooring, our decking.
What is the difference between 6 coats UV coating and water-based coating?
Industrial UV painting guarantees, with its high weight of paint applied with a roller in 6 passes and fixed with UV lamps, strong resistance, making the material more “plasticky” to the touch. The water-based paint can have a wax effect or an extra-gloss Gloss® line and is characterized by the total absence of toxic emissions. This makes it ideal for green building and feels more natural to the touch.
Better brushed or smooth?
The engraving treatments have the quality of enhancing some specific characteristics of the boards such as the colour, the pattern of the grain and the tactility of the material. Brushing acts directly on the grain of the wood and consists of removing the softest part from the surface of the boards using steel brushes. In this way, making the surface slightly irregular has the advantage of hiding the signs of aging of the wooden floor. The smooth or pre-sanded treatment consists in sanding the boards until the surface of the parquet is completely smooth to the touch, making the finish shinier and more sensitive. The materials that are least suitable for brushing, being very hard materials, are Walnut, Afrormosia and Cabreuva.
Is it better to lay a solid piece or a pre-finished one?
The decision is subjective however there are some characteristics linked to the two types of flooring that can help you in your choice.
The pre-finished product has shorter installation times and is walkable after just 24 hours; the massif, however, must be sanded and finished on site after installation, operations which require around thirty days. However, this is an advantage if a personalized and particular finish is required.
Having greater dimensional stability, due to the birch phenolic plywood, pre-finished products can be had in larger maximum sizes than solid ones. The pre-finished product is also recommended for installation on heating and/or cooling floor screeds and in the case of renovations on pre-existing floors where the installation of the massif could cause some problems if the right precautions are not taken. Finally, the massif is requested by those who want to recreate an environment with an ancient flavour by choosing a completely natural material, without glues and 100% noble wood.
What is a pre-finished?
The pre-finished product can be in two or three layers, worked with tongue and groove joints on all 4 sides and is supplied already calibrated, sanded and painted ready for installation.
The lower layer called support (phenolic birch multilayer in class E1 in our case) is glued to the upper layer called “noble wood” in solid wood. Quick and practical to install, it can already be walked on after 24 hours. Pre-finished parquet guarantees stability, resistance, practicality, beauty and elegance.
What is a traditional massif?
Solid wood is a solid wood strip, meaning the entire thickness of the element is made of “noble wood”.
It can be produced with a tongue and groove joint for greater stability, especially in the larger formats, or without a joint for the smaller formats. The installation must be glued and the solid wood is sanded and painted on site.
What are laminate and melamine floors?
Melamine laminate floors are not wooden floors. These are decorative coverings which, by exploiting the existence of melamine resins applied on their surface, present an aesthetic appearance similar to that of wooden floors but which has nothing to do with the characteristics of naturalness, warmth and quality of the latter.
Built with wood-derived support materials, such as chipboard, MDF or HDF, they are very sensitive to any changes in environmental humidity.
What is a wooden floor?
The wooden floor or parquet is a flooring made of solid wood with a thickness of the top layer of no less than 2.5mm before installation.

General questions
What is dimensional stability?
This is calculated by applying the test method established by the UNI EN 1910 standard.
What is thermal resistance?
The thermal resistance R is given by the sum of the thermal resistances of each component of the layer of which a material is composed. This value describes how much a structure, or a single layer, opposes the passage of heat: the value is directly proportional to the thickness of the layer. In practice, it is the difficulty heat has in passing through a solid, liquid or gaseous medium.
All our pre-finished materials are suitable for laying on heating and/or cooling screeds as the thermal resistance falls within the parameters of current legislation.
What is hardness?
Wood hardness is the property of wood that indicates its resistance to penetration. It is determined following the procedures and indications imposed by the UNI EN 1534 standard – Determination of resistance to penetration (Brinell).
Brinell hardness is determined by the size of the imprint of the load detected in the wood: the smaller the size of the imprint, the greater the hardness of the wood and therefore the resistance and durability of the floor. It is important to consider that wood is a living material and its structure, shaped by nature over the years, is not uniform: for this reason the Brinell test is performed several times on each type of wood.
What is outdoor decking?
Outdoor decking means a solid wood strip suitable for installation in outdoor environments.
The material is supplied with or without anti-slip knurling in the upper part and with lateral millings for the insertion of the clips which guarantee the seal to the underlying slat/strip and create a space between stave and stave of approximately 3/4 mm, necessary for the water drainage to the ground.
The outdoor floor is also equipped with oil for the treatment and maintenance of the material (against greying due to atmospheric agents and solar and lunar rays). For good maintenance of the floor, this treatment must be renewed annually after the winter season after washing with the appropriate detergent. In addition to outdoor decking in planks to be fixed with clips, there are pre-composed tiles with an upper part in solid wood and a lower part with a resin support. The tiles are practical and quick in executing the running or checkerboard layout.
What is formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a bactericide that can be present in the food, textile, wood industries and in many other uses linked to its preservative and biocidal action. The adhesive that holds together the plywood chips or sheets widely used in the production of wooden floors is in fact capable of releasing formaldehyde even for long periods, contributing to increasing the concentrations of this gas inside our homes, our offices and of all places of life. Its danger is linked to its volatility. When we breathe we also take in small particles of formaldehyde. At certain concentrations, formaldehyde causes irritative effects on the respiratory tract and eyes. In 2006 the International Import Products Agency for Cancer Research declared its possible carcinogenic effects. The panels produced in Italy and consequently the finished products with which they are made must therefore respect certain parameters and Italian manufacturing companies are required, by law, to constantly carry out accurate checks on their production, ensuring compliance. The imported product intended for the homes of our families does not bring with it any safety on the standards established by law in terms of formaldehyde.
What is the product sheet?
The product identification sheet is a document prepared by the supplier and must be delivered with each supply to the end user, to comply with the provisions of the Legislative Decree of 6 September 2005 n. 206.
This document:

Our Product Sheet is contained in an elegant case with modern graphics in which all the characteristics that make a Garbelotto parquet unique and precious are specified.
What risks do you run when purchasing imported products?
In most cases, the imported product has only one advantage: cost savings.
However, this is countered by a huge disadvantage, namely the non-traceability of the product which does not allow us to know the materials contained in the product and their origin, for example glues and paints. The impossibility of knowing the quality of the raw materials and their components makes these products unreliable and potentially harmful to health. This translates into a lack of protection for the final consumer.
